I’m not a writer. Other than emails, I haven’t written anything remotely close to this since a college paper. I’m also a man of few words, so let’s give it the old college try.
To me, humility is one’s willingness to acknowledge that one is standing on the shoulders of those who came before you. It is a general sense of selfless, others-focused thoughts and actions. When you are humble, failure is not a threat to your identity. It is an opportunity to learn. It creates space for growth, collaboration, and resilience.
A humble leader doesn’t need to have all the answers. They listen well, lead by example, and seek to understand first. This virtue is critical to all aspects of and roles within our business at Crawlspace Medic, from the way we interact with our team members and peers to the way we approach our customers and make decisions.
Humility keeps us grounded in what matters most and helps us to stay adaptable and focused on people first. The heartbeat of Crawlspace Medic is our people, and the only way to build strong teams is with a humble approach that creates space for collaboration. We must listen, share credit where it is due, and value each other. Each day, we are tasked with making decisions, small daily choices, and critical business-altering decisions. Approaching those decisions with a humble mindset allows us to seek truth over ego and leave pride and pressure out of the equation.
Ultimately, employees, partners, and customers are drawn to honest, servant-hearted leaders. They want to trust and be loyal to them. If we can operate out of this virtue of humility, it will create lasting relationships that will be the bedrock for continued sustainable growth.
Our goal at Crawlspace Medic is to create something that will last far beyond ourselves. Humility will help give us the wisdom to do that. Let’s continue to seek to grow this virtue in ourselves and our teams (I’ve got plenty of work to do myself). It will lead to continued success, innovation, and a business built on integrity.
