Aesop’s Fables were some of my favorite readings as a young tyke. Aesop lived in Greece around 600 BC which is quite a long time ago. These fables were short stories with a lesson at the end. “The Man and the Satyr” fable deals with the themes of consistency and trust (aka – dependability). These themes are byproducts of our virtue of the week. The satyr ends up leaving the man’s company due to the man blowing cold and warm air out of his mouth (look up the fable). He views this as an inconsistency of character.
When we speak, we need to follow through every time. Saying one thing, and doing another, erodes any trust we may have built up with co-workers, family members, or customers. Trust erosion, because of not being dependable, is like soil erosion in the crawlspace. One cause of erosion is the intrusion of water which can lead to a weak foundation. If we tolerate unreliability, we deliberately allow the intrusion of weakness to our foundation. Dependable individuals are the foundation of HomeBrands and every brand in the family. Once that trust is gone, it is hard to regain. Dependability strengthens trust and is the bedrock virtue for HomeBrands.
Without dependability, we will not have the opportunity to live out our other virtues before others. God’s word is dependable, true, consistent, and lasting. Our words should mirror these characteristics each day.
Do people trust your words? Do they trust you? Be dependable today and then do it all over again tomorrow. Dependability should be the rinse and repeat cycle of life.
