Gritty
We get things done the right way, no matter the circumstance.
This is a great virtue. Each of us is called to lead in some form or fashion, regardless of title or position. Life, personal and business, can throw us a curveball now and then. It is our response to these moments that lets others know whether we are gritty.
Like some of you, I am a massive fan of Jocko. He has a quote that says,
“Good leaders do not make excuses. Instead, they figure out a way to get things done.”
One of the biggest disappointments to watch is a person who quits when times are tough. Grittiness and dependability are lacking. Two virtues that are seen daily.
Roberto Duran was voted as one of the greatest boxers in history. 119 total fights, 103 wins. At one time, he was nicknamed Hands of Stone. Sadly, he is best known for one fight in 1980. A rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard, whom he had previously defeated.
Roberto Duran quit the fight after eight rounds. “No mas” or no more. The world watched a great fighter throw in the towel on himself. His legacy was forever tarnished with the simple act of quitting. What a disappointment to his fans and supporters.
We have seen our share of Roberto Durans in our lives. Do not be the quitter—stick it out until the final bell rings, the final whistle blows, the checkered flag waves, or whatever analogy suits you best.
Do not disappoint others by not being gritty when times are tough. Do not be a disappointment to yourself. Keep stoking the inner fire and push through to the end.
Grit is another sign of perseverance. We are called to persevere, no matter what.
