Dependable—Not Natural (for me), But Necessary

Team,

This week’s virtue is Dependable, and it’s one I have to admit doesn’t come naturally to me. Our definition is simple but powerful: We do what we say we are going to do, every time, no exceptions. That’s a high standard, and I’ll be honest—I haven’t always been the guy who picks up the phone on the first ring or answers every email promptly. Some of you are probably nodding too enthusiastically right now.

For me, dependability is not instinctive; it’s learned. It’s a virtue I’ve had to intentionally develop as a father, a husband, and a leader. Why? Because people depend on me. And nothing humbles you more than realizing that your follow-through (or lack thereof) impacts others.

Proverbs 27:17 (ESV): Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.

For me, this means my reliability sharpens others, just as their dependability sharpens me. I don’t strive to be dependable because I love structure or order—I do it because it strengthens the people I care about and builds trust that multiplies.

Our virtues are what set us apart. Dependability may not come naturally to everyone (least of all me), but when we embrace it, we build the kind of team and culture that people want to (and can) depend on.

Let’s continue to do what we say we’re going to do. Every time. And when we don’t, let’s be humble and learn from our mistakes.

Here’s to sharpening each other,
