Cultivating Humility in the Face of Criticism

We do not operate out of selfish ambition but value others above ourselves. Our virtue of the week is often a hard one—at least for me—to live out when I think someone has wronged the brand or me.

How do you react when the 1-star Google review is submitted? Constructive criticism is often received in anger or defensiveness. But when I slow down and reflect on the comment, feedback, or whatever it is that riles me up, I usually learn a valuable lesson that helps me improve as a person.

The ability to listen and learn is sometimes challenging to put into practice. But it is this ability that enables each of us to grow as leaders in our homes and workplaces. Receiving feedback in a state of humility fosters growth.

C.S. Lewis has a great quote: “Humility is not thinking less of ourselves, but thinking of ourselves less.” Forming a habit of receiving correction with the blinders removed will enable us to overcome our shortcomings and strengthen our character.

Humility will cause us to be honest with ourselves and others about our failings. If we do this, we will truly put others ahead of ourselves and move the needle in our markets and homes.

How can you cultivate humility and, in turn, grow as an individual this week?
